OCR: ROBOTS MARTIAN ROVERS ROBOTS IN FILM The artificial eye Scientists long thought that the visual capacities of the human eye, its acuity and sensitivity, could not be imitated. However, today's panoramic cameras far outperform the eye. They operate in the following manner: A small mirror, weighing less than the human eyeball, is located in the upper portion of a vertical tube. This mirror can capture light from any direction, rapidly pivoting 360º or moving in small increments to examine closely a specific area. It then reflects the light ray onto groups of photosensitive cells that detect colors. Panoramic cameras of this kind on space probes are now used to make photographs, but they could function like a human eye and distinguish objects by their shapes if they were linked to an artificial intelligence.
